A propeller shaft, also called as drive shaft, is an important component in automotive and marine industries. Its primary motive is the transmission of torque and rotational power from the engine to the wheels or propeller. It allows vehicles and vessels to move efficiently and smoothly. The propeller shaft plays an indispensable role in converting the engine's power into kinetic energy, thereby, enabling the propeller to rotate at the required speed and move the vehicle forward.
Flanged shafts are used for torque transmission in the powertrain. On the one hand, they serve as a full floating axle shaft for driven rigid axles in commercial vehicles and, on the other hand, as a connection between the differential gear and the constant-velocity shaft in passenger cars. Process combinations are usually used to produce the flanged shafts. Firstly, the flange is generated by means of extrusion, then the shaft is elongated by swaging and, at the same time, the diameter is reduced. In this way, long undercuts are possible that would otherwise have to be produced by machining.
